Smash Burger
This easy recipe features perfectly caramelized onions, a secret killer sauce, and smashed beef patties cooked to perfection.
Ingredients
- – 1 medium onion finely diced
- – 1 tablespoons butter
- – Salt
- – 1 pound ground beef
- – Pickles finely chopped
- – 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- – 2 tablespoons ketchup
- – 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
- – 4 American cheese slices
- – 2 Burger buns
- – Lettuce
- – Tomato slices
Instructions
Caramelize the Onions
- -Dice the onions finely.
- – In a skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
- – Add the onions to the skillet and season with a pinch of salt.
- – Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are deep brown and caramelized. This should take about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
Prepare the Patties
- – Divide the ground beef into 4 quarter-pound portions.
- – Season the beef to your liking and shape each portion into a circle and set them aside on a piece of baking paper while you prepare the other ingredients.
- -Note: I personally don’t go overboard with the seasoning in my beef. A simple sprinkle of salt and pepper and a few other spices works perfectly.
Make the In-N-Out Sauce
- – Finely chop the pickles.
- – In a bowl, mix together the chopped pickles, caramelised onions ,mayonnaise, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce.
- – Stir until well combined. This is your homemade In-N-Out sauce.
Cook the Patties
- – Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
- – Place the patties in the skillet. Use a piece of parchment paper and a potato masher to press them down to get a nice sear.
- – Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.
- – **Note:** Cook it on medium-high heat. Cooking your beef on low heat makes all the juices ooze out and leaves you with a dry patty. Don’t overcook them.
- – Flip the patties and add a slice of American cheese to each one. Let the cheese melt.
Toast the Buns
- – Toast the burger buns in the same skillet until they are golden brown.
Assemble the Burger
- – Spread the homemade In-N-Out sauce on the bottom bun.
- – Place a patty with melted cheese on top.
- – Add a generous amount of caramelized onions (optional)
- – Top with lettuce and tomato slices.
- – Add another patty with cheese.
- – Spread with more sauce and crown with the top bun.
